Study Implicates Online Gaming Addiction in Physical Health Problems

Online video games are one of the most popular online activities on the World Wide Web today. An online game is basically a video game which is either largely or partially played over the Internet or some other interactive computer network. There are many different types of online games from simple card games to massive multi-player games and role playing games, and many other types of online games.

Online video games provide a way for people to play together and interact with each other, not only in single player offline modes but also in multiplayer modes. The basic reason for its popularity is that these games allow players to socialize with each other in an environment which is often very similar to what they would experience in real life. This is why online video games are often referred to as “mediated social spaces.”

One of the ways that online video games can be a mediated social space is through in-game purchases. In most games, purchasing in-game items usually require a form of interaction, such as clicking a button or making an in-game purchase. When a player makes an in-game purchase, it is generally because he or she has built up enough money to purchase that particular item, and thus “purchased” that item. However, there are some online video games that require the player to perform in-game tasks in order to unlock loot boxes or other special items; these items are called in-app purchases.  Visit for more information.

One example of an in-game system where in-app purchases can take up space and contribute to a more jaded player’s experience is World of Warcraft (WoW). In WoW, players are required to make in-game purchases in order to get the best gear, weapons, and other items that they can afford. This is because it is almost impossible for players to create in-game money in WoW without spending real money, so it is imperative that players are willing to invest both time and money to be successful in WoW. Despite this, WoW players oftentimes find themselves complaining about how in-game spending and time sinks force them to spend too much time and money on in-app purchases rather than playing their character. This issue was brought to light when WoW gamers started complaining that certain items, namely potions, were being sold cheaply in the in-game marketplace, thereby nullifying the purpose of the in-game economy.

The current study offers the theory that while some gaming habits may contribute to negative consequences like offline real-world friendships, there are also tangible social benefits to be had from online video games. Specifically, the current study suggests that those who play FarmVille, simulation, and strategy games have greater social capital than those who do not. Those who have built significant social networks in the game and have access to tangible assets like digital art, virtual gold, and other gaming tokens have greater perceived power in the game than those who do not. The research therefore suggests that the virtual world of online video games has the potential to promote offline friendship while promoting increased online friendships as well.

So why does the world of online games have such a strong influence over our culture? Aside from the entertainment value, many have noted that online gaming addiction has a strong societal effect. One of the biggest concerns about video game addiction has been violence, especially among young children. There have also been reports of significant changes in the way that relationships between people develop and the amount of intimacy they experience with their partners have declined over the years. It is also becoming increasingly clear that many marriages and domestic partnerships have broken down over time due to the excessive game playing among young adults. All these factors, along with the social and tangible benefits of playing video games, may be contributing factors towards why more people are being diagnosed with an online gaming addiction each year.
