Online Video Games and Their Relationship to Society

Online video games refer to video games that are played by individuals using specialized computers. These video games can either be downloaded from the Internet or purchased and downloaded from personal computers, game consoles, digital computer systems and the Internet itself. Most online video games have virtual worlds in which the players participate in different types of virtual activities, depending on the type of game. In most online video games the objective is to earn points or to complete various challenges.

An online video game is a virtual interactive game that is either largely or partially played over the Internet or some other peer-to-peer computer network. It can be played either alone or with others; however it has been shown that when playing in groups, the players experience a higher degree of engagement and improve their chances of winning or completing a task. In addition, these online video games can be used as a source of relaxation and even therapy for some people. One of the benefits of playing online video games is that there is no requirement for expensive, high-tech gaming console systems to be used, nor do users need to be connected to a personal computer with a large hard drive. In the present study we examine how online games can be used to enhance social interaction. The study examines how the use of an online multiplayer game platform improves interpersonal relations in the workplace. The research is part of a larger study called the Study of Games and Social Communication. This project involved using Google scholar to search for articles regarding online games and the topics of social interaction. Using this approach Google scholar was able to gather a sample of published literature on the topics of online games and interpersonal relationships.

The majority of the literature searched was concerned with academic studies of gaming and computer mediated communication. A few samples actually comprised of contributions from sociologists, psychologists and organizational specialists. In particular, many articles focused on the construction of social capital and networking within video games. As social capital and networks are necessary for building meaningful relationships, the authors argue that games can facilitate the development of these relationships. Gamers can help shape the future of online friendship by participating in friendship communities and forming lasting friendships through video gaming. This research contributes to the growing body of evidence that emphasizes the importance of human social interactions in building and maintaining a healthy society.

The authors conclude their study by stating that the results of the present study are preliminary and that more research is needed to determine the exact benefits of online friendships. More importantly, the results provide empirical support for the claim that playing video games can improve interpersonal relationships. In fact, the authors suggest that future research should focus on studying how playing this type of game influences social skill development and other aspects of human social development. In addition, the present study provides evidence that online gamers are not necessarily isolating individuals but rather are interacting with others in an increasingly common and complex environment. The research confirms that the games provided can promote meaningful and trusting relationships. Finally, the research shows that there are strong interpersonal benefits of playing this type of game.
